Inside Selhurst: How engineers rebuilt 300 Electrostar trains without sending a single one off-site

Refurbishment of Electrostar Trains

A £100 million project to refurbish over 300 Electrostar trains used across the Govia Thameslink (GTR) network has been completed.

The project, which took five years to finish, is believed to be the largest fleet upgrade in modern times.

GTR runs trains under the Thameslink, Great Northern, Southern, and Gatwick Express names.

The refurbishment was carried out in-house by GTR staff at the Selhurst depot, making it unusual in that no third-party refurbishment company was involved.

By bringing the job in-house, GTR was able to utilize its existing Selhurst depot for the refurbishment.

No single train was sent off-site for the refurbishment.
