Austrian Filmmakers Call for Levy on Streamers

Austrian filmmakers are urging the government to introduce a levy on streaming platforms to invest in local content.

"International streaming platforms are doing good business in Austria and generating high revenues, but at the same time they show little interest in investing in content, filmmakers and creativity from Austria,"

An open letter to the government, signed by top directors including Stefan Ruzowitzky, Barbara Albert, Ruth Beckmann, and Markus Schleinzer, as well as 23 film trade associations, proposes a levy that could generate up to €40 million per year for the film industry.

Austrian filmmakers are calling for the "rapid" implementation of an investment obligation in local content by global streaming platforms.
