Fatal Crash on I-24 in Massac County
A fatal crash involving two tractor-trailers occurred on Interstate 24 in Massac County on Tuesday morning, shutting down a portion of the highway.
The crash happened around 2:30 a.m. on I-24 eastbound, near the New Columbia/Big Bay exit and the Rosebud Road overpass, close to milepost 32.
According to Illinois State Police, one semi rear-ended the other, causing both vehicles to catch fire due to the force of the crash.
- One driver was killed in the accident.
- The other driver was flown to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The eastbound lane of I-24 was closed from Route 146 at Vienna to US 45 at Metropolis for several hours but has since partially reopened, with one lane open as of 9 a.m.
