Mosquito-borne Chikungunya virus confirmed in NY: What to know
State health officials reported the first locally acquired case of Chikungunya disease in New York.
A person on Long Island was infected with the virus, which is commonly found in tropical and subtropical regions and is rarely fatal, according to the state health department.
The virus causes symptoms such as:
- fever
- joint pain and swelling
- headaches
- muscle pain
- rashes
The case was confirmed through lab testing in Nassau County, but the exact location of infection is still under investigation.
The Aedes albopictus mosquito, which transmits Chikungunya, is present in parts of downstate New York.
No person-to-person transmission of the virus occurs.
