Smith County Accepts Donated Cornerstone for New Courthouse

Smith County Commissioners Court accepted a donated cornerstone from John's Masonic Lodge in Tyler for the new county courthouse.

The Masons have supplied cornerstones for 130 other Texas courthouses, the state capitol building, and Whitehouse High School.

The ceremonial placement of cornerstones has long been considered a significant milestone in construction projects.

The $179 million courthouse bond project is expected to be majority completed by late September or October 2026, with a final completion date set for the first week of December 2026.

The project's first phase, a new county parking garage, has already been completed.
